Bell Curve (Midwit)

The least and most sophisticated people agree; the middle overcomplicates it.

Three captions. The left, at the low end, and the right, at the high end, should say substantially the same thing — usually the simple and correct answer. The middle says something elaborate and wrong.

The two ends matching is the entire format. If they differ, it becomes an ordinary ranking and loses its point.

It is a smug shape and reads as such, which is worth using deliberately. The best versions aim it at the author rather than at someone else.

Common mistakes

Three different answers, which turns the curve into a list.
A middle position that is obviously stupid — it should sound clever, which is the joke.
Forgetting that the ends must match almost word for word.
